America’s country music legend, 80-year-old Dolly Parton, sadly passed away on August 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. In a career spanning more than six decades, Dolly Parton became one of the most successful and beloved entertainers in history. She wrote thousands of songs and created timeless classics, including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Dolly was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee. She grew up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee as one of twelve children. She started writing songs at an early age, and her love for music began to grow.
After graduating from high school in 1964, Parton moved to Nashville to follow her dream of becoming a country music star. She signed her first record deal with Monument Records and began making her talent in country music known.
By 1967, Parton had released her debut studio album, Hello, I’m Dolly. That same year, she joined The Porter Wagoner Show, beginning what became a hugely successful collaboration with country singer Porter Wagoner.
Through the late 1960s and early 1970s, Parton and Wagoner were a much-loved duo in the country music industry. This collaboration brought her into the spotlight and spearheaded her career as a solo artist.
In 1969, Parton’s childhood dream came true when she became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Just two years later, she got her first number one country single with “Joshua.”
Through the early 1970s, Parton did not stop making every effort to make herself known as one of country music’s greatest songwriters and performers. The songs she released are far too many to list, but the most well-known ones, “Coat of Many Colors,” “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” went on to become timeless classics.
In 1974, Dolly left The Porter Wagoner Show and focused her energy fully on her solo career. Her song “I Will Always Love You,” was, in fact, inspired by her departure from the show. Little did she know that this song would go on to become one of the most famous and beloved songs, not only in the USA, but around the world.
Dolly did not waste a moment of her life. As the years went by, her career grew exponentially. She wasn’t just a favourite in the country music industry either! Her music crossed over into the pop charts. One of her songs, “Here You Come Again,” introduced her to a much wider audience. In 1978, she fully earned the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year title.
Along with her music career, Parton went on to find great success in Hollywood. In 1980, she made her first film appearance with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the much-loved movie 9 to 5. The film’s title song became another massive hit and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in no time at all.
She went on to appear in several memorable films, including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, Steel Magnolias, Straight Talk, and Joyful Noise. While stealing the limelight in film throughout the 1980s, she continued to rule the music charts, going on to record the massively successful “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers.
Parton was not only a talented singer, songwriter, and actress, but a successful businesswoman too. In 1986, she opened the theme park Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. This theme park has been one of the most popular attractions in the area.
It’s important to know that her most incredible legacy has been her generosity. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she began Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a literacy programme that provided free books to children around the world. Her charitable work supported healthcare, education, disaster relief, and numerous other causes.
Among her long list of other accolades were multiple Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Centre Honors. She was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 2022, Parton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even after so many years in the entertainment industry, she was still willing to explore new musical genres, and did, by releasing her album Rockstar.
From her small beginnings in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to becoming an international phenomenon, Dolly has touched the lives of past generations and will no doubt touch many more around the world with her undeniable talent, kindness, humour, and generosity.
